Some have been preparing for this day for years, like Nero, who has been growing his beard for five years, according to owner Dave.
Otherwise tried to impress with costumes, like Eilidh and Steph's friend Ralph, looking dashing in a tuxedo and top hat.
Eilidh suggested Ralph, a veteran of the Dachshund Derby, try his pumpkin costume next time.
Organiser Brayden Dorney, from the Ballarat Beard and Moustache Union, said it was a fun prelude to next week's human Beard and Moustache Competition.
"This is our first year, a trial run, and it's good to see some great beards and dogs turning up," he said, noting entrants had a week to get ready.

"If you're going for a chop, don't take too much off - get rid of the split ends, give it a comb and some oil, and you're on your way," he advised.
