All emergency services - including police, firefighters and paramedics - were called to the single-vehicle crash in Verbena Grove about 2pm.
A male driver, believed to be aged in his 20s, crashed into a power pole with the impact crushing the front half of the car.
Multiple Country Fire Authority and Fire Rescue Victoria brigades worked together to extricate the driver from his car for about an hour.
Police at the scene told The Courier the male, who was the only occupant of the car, was in a serious condition.
The man has suffered back and leg injuries, according to Ambulance Victoria.
An air ambulance has landed at a school oval nearby. At this stage it is understood that he will be flown to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.
Nobody else was injured as a result of the crash.
The crash has not caused any power outages in the area.
It is not yet known what caused the male to crash, with police saying they would investigate all possibilities.
Police request any witnesses or anyone with CCTV to contact Constable Kelly Booth at Ballarat Police Station.
