FLAGS above Ballarat Town Hall are flying at half-mast on Wednesday to commemorate the life of beloved Ballarat businessman David Haymes.

This is the first time the town hall's flags have been lowered for an individual since AFL great Danny Frawley's death in September 2019.
He will be farewelled in a private funeral due to COVID restrictions on Wednesday afternoon. The funeral will be live-streamed via Peter Tobin funerals from 2pm.
City of Ballarat chief Evan King, in a statement to media, said Mr Haymes was a great supporter of the community and would be long remembered for his contribution to the city.
Mr Haymes died last week, aged 77.
He was best-known for realigning and reinvigorating the Ballarat-based family business for more than 50 years, elevating the Haymes brand on a national level.

Mr Haymes, an old Collegian, also played an active role in his former school.
He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Business from the University of Ballarat for "his outstanding service to business and the community" where he served as chairman of the University of Ballarat School of Business advisory board and an executive member of the Committee for Ballarat
He was a member of the community advisory board for The Courier, chairman of the Board of Family Business Australia and a council member of the Australian Paint Manufacturers Federation.
Mr Haymes also played an active role within his local and the wider business communities through organisations including APEX, Australian Chamber of Manufacturers (AIG), Australian Paint Manufacturer's Federation, Family Business Australia and Federation University.
