McSweyn, who is Tokyo Olympics bound, clocked the record time in finishing fourth at the Monaco Diamond L meet overnight.
The Tasmanian, who attended Ballarat Clarendon College and was ran Eureka Athletic Club colours while living in Ballarat, ran 3:29.51.
Kenyan Timothy Cheruiyot won in 3:28.28.
McSweyn is now the equal 26th fastest man in history over 1500m.
