Ballarat fans rejoiced early this morning as they celebrated the long-awaited win, as Italy had not claimed victory in the Euro cup since 1968.
Young fan Angus Farrell, 11, who woke up at 5am and watched the match with his mother and older brother, said his family screamed with happiness when they realised their team had won.
"We ran around celebrating, there were pillows everywhere," Angus said.
Angus said he wore his Italian soccer uniform to bed the night before, the outfit being a surprise gift from his older brother, in anticipation of their team's victory.
"I smiled all day at school, I was really happy," Angus said.
IN THE NEWS:
His mother Carmen Farrell, who has coached soccer in Ballarat for the past 20 years, said it was exciting for the whole family to watch Italy do well throughout the cup and play in the final.
"My family were all very excited, we were all on FaceTime, everyone in my family got up to watch the game and they were texting the kids to celebrate the joy," Ms Farrell said.
