Meg Lanning, Sophie Devine among stars in line to play in Ballarat's WBBL festival

The Melbourne Renegades will be joined by reigning champions Sydney Thunder, Melbourne Stars and Perth Scorchers for a four-match festival at Eastern Oval.

The match-ups will bring World Cup winners and the world's top-ranked all-rounder to the city.

Melbourne Renegades general manager James Rosengarten said the club was hoping to forge a long-term relationship with Ballarat.

"Eastern Oval is a fantastic facility for cricket and together with the impressive cricket hub facilities, it's a focal point for the community. I'm sure we can count on all of Ballarat to get out and pain the town red in November," he said.

"Even in my very short time in the role, the feedback I've already had about Ballarat and the support for the Renegades is fantastic."

The Renegades have two Australian Twenty20 World Cup winners within in their ranks in captain Sophie Molineux and Georgia Wareham.

The Perth Scorchers, meanwhile, recently re-signed the world's top-ranked all-rounder and last season's Player of the Tournament, Sophie Devine.

Also in line to play in Ballarat are Australia and Melbourne Stars captain Meg Lanning and star Scorchers opener Beth Mooney, who was recently named Wisden's Leading Woman Cricketer in the World.

Returning Melbourne Renegades star Jess Duffin hopes a WBBL festival in Ballarat will help attract more girls to cricket.

The former Australian batter - who has re-signed for 2021 after missing last season on maternity leave - said it was important for young cricketers to see the levels they could reach.

"It makes a whole lot of difference when you're able to interact with (players)," she said.

"At the end of the day, I remember when I was a young kid, and all I wanted to do was go out and see some really talented athletes and get up-close-and-personal with them."

Duffin featured the last time the Renegades played in Ballarat back in 2018.

"The Ballarat crowd that came out was awesome. They're always down here supporting us," she said.

"We love coming out here. We know the country community always gets out and supports anyone that's down here. Hopefully they wear red though."

City of Ballarat mayor Daniel Moloney said hosting elite female sporting events was an important step in addressing inequality in Ballarat.

"We're still trying to reverse right now a trend where boys are probably twice as likely to take part in sport in this city," Cr Moloney said.

"That is something we've been trying to change over the last several years but also attracting some of the best female talent across all sports to show regional girls and women that they can also compete at the top level.

"Seeing stars in action is incredibly important in reversing that trend."
