Gillian and Ken Turner were fast asleep in their Navigators home when there was "an incredibly big bang" about midnight.

After "gathering [his] wits'", Mr Turner checked on his wife and then got out of bed to investigate the noise.

"I walked around the house trying to find where it had come from. It was all fine," he recounted.

"Then I went around looking at the sheds and carports and they were all fine too."

It was when he walked to the side of his house where he and his wife had been sleeping that he found the cause, lit up by his torch: an awfully large tree had fallen on the roof of their house, right above the bedroom.

Their beloved dog, 11-year-old Pearl, had been sleeping in the bedroom next to the window and despite a big fright, she was not injured either.

Miraculously, a branch of the tree had born the brunt of its weight when it fell, meaning it did not damage the roof or smash any of the windows it had come to rest on.

"I thought, how the hell could such a big tree not cause any damage to the house?

"If any of those branches had gone through, we all could have been history," Mr Turner said.

The couple sat down with a cup of tea to lull them back to sleep, but only after giving each other a hug and expressing just how lucky they were to escape uninjured and with no noticeable damage to their house.

The tree was brought down by strong winds, with Mr Turner telling The Courier it continued to "blow a gale" for hours after the tree fell.

The couple have lived in the home for more than 20 years and despite being surrounded by many big and beautiful trees, none have ever fallen on the house.

With the light of morning, they were shocked yet grateful to discover no noticeable damage to the home, their hot water system or solar panels.

The tree also narrowly missed their pergola and some of their favourite plants.

With fears of potentially causing damage to the house or themselves if they attempted to remove the tree themselves, they called the State Emergency Service to help chop up the tree and remove it on Saturday morning.
