A man accused of stealing WW1 firearms from an RSL and driving his car at police has been granted bail.
Reappearing at the Ballarat Magistrates' Court on Wednesday morning, Wendouree man Trent Bunney, 30, will return to court later in August.
His mother said he would be able to live with her, but requested an ankle bracelet to monitor his whereabouts, which was refused.
Bunney told the court he was beginning to re-engage with rehabilitative services following his release from prison in July, and would continue to do so.
Magistrate Letizia Torres granted bail with several conditions, including living in Willaura, a curfew, and not to associate with the co-accused.
"I don't want to hear any excuses," she told Bunney.
"You'll have to get on the train or bus and get here like everyone else without a licence."
PREVIOUSLY: A 30-year-old Wendouree man arrested for allegedly driving at police has been linked to a burglary at an RSL.
Trent Bunney faced the Ballarat Magistrates' Court on Tuesday afternoon, after his arrest on Monday in front of his home.
Police arrived after reports of a stolen vehicle at his address about 11am.
It's alleged Bunney, who has been disqualified from driving, was in the vehicle in the driveway, and attempted to drive at a police officer sitting in an unmarked police vehicle, with his vehicle only stopping when officers forced it to stop.
There was no collision and no one was harmed, but Bunney was charged with reckless exposure of an emergency service worker to risk while driving.
An allegedly stolen motorbike and stolen numberplates were also found at the scene.
Police then searched his house, finding a backpack in his bedroom with cartridge ammunition, a taser, a flick knife, knuckledusters, and 252 grams of cannabis - Bunney, representing himself from the dock, denied any knowledge of the backpack or its contents.
Police also arrested another man in his backyard who had several outstanding warrants, as well as a co-accused in Bunney's vehicle.
Overnight, Bunney was also charged with offending from January this year at the Midlands RSL, with glass from a broken door found in his shoes, and DNA evidence on a hammer used in a burglary.
It's alleged Bunney and a co-offender smashed a door to gain entry, then smashed two display cabinets holding vintage display firearms, including from World War 1.
According to the police summary, a 1911 Colt .45 pistol set in a frame, a .303 Enfield Martini rifle, a B Enfield rifle, a WW1 German flare gun pistol, and ceremonial daggers were stolen.
The firearms have not been recovered.
Bunney is currently on a community corrections order after finishing a term of imprisonment in July.
Representing himself in court, Bunney asked the police informant about how the vehicle is alleged to have moved.
In a situation where he must show compelling reasons to be granted bail, he said his partner, who was also arrested in relation to the backpack, was pregnant, and he could live at his mother's house.
IN THE NEWS
He said he had just begun to engage with the rehabilitative aspects of his CCO, and had been doing "the best he's ever done" off drugs since his release from prison.
Magistrate Letizia Torres said she there were "a lot of alarm bells".
"I'm very concerned about the risk of reoffending - even if the things you say turn out to be right, I'm not sure about your lifestyle, your environment , and your choices," she told Bunney.
"I specifically told you not to drive without a licence, and your offending is always in a car.
"I could be potentially persuaded risks could be mitigated if you live with mum and I hear from your Corrections officer that you are engaged and relatively on the right path, but I haven't got any of those people here."
The case was adjourned to Wednesday morning to allow Bunney to get further evidence to support his application.
