Throughout the month, referees across Basketball Ballarat will be blowing green whistles in support of the organisation which supports young people dealing with mental health issues.
Referee manager Chloe Dunmore said referees had purchased green whistles and lanyards, already raising more than $500.
A fundraising website has been launched to support the cause.
"We thought it would be fitting with 2020 and 2021 being so difficult for so many, that headspace was an organisation we'd like to support," Dunmore said.
"Especially last year, restrictions really hit us hard. For many refereeing is the first job for those who love basketball as a hobby. The fact we didn't have any play last year was difficult for a lot.
"We've tried to reach out the best we can to support everyone, but the more we go into lockdown, the harder it gets.
"Last year, across Ballarat and across the state, we lost about 30 per cent of referees, because they decided to go an get jobs and supermarkets, because they knew even if a lockdown was coming, they'd still have guaranteed work."
