"There wasn't a surprise when you hear that a lot of country leagues had declared their season over," Redan coach Peter Forbes said.
"It was looming, but still a shock to wake up and find that what you'd been preparing for all year isn't going to happen."
Forbes credited his playing group for their efforts through the season.
"We put a lot of work in, you don't get to the position we're in just on talent alone," he said.
"It's been I guess a testing time with all the disruptions, but also testament to the playing group ... that have kept people focused, we've had really good attendance at training the whole year."
Melton Centrals was the only metropolitan Melbourne side that qualified for finals, finishing fourth on the ladder.
Darley and Bacchus Marsh, who finished second and sixth respectively, are regional cities, however, they are heavily affected by a lot of members who live in metropolitan Melbourne.
The BFNL is still holding out hope that the Youth and Junior Girls competitions will be able to complete their finals series as planned.
In a statement the league said those competitions will be assessed during the week of Monday, September 6, when the state government is expected to make an announcement on regional restrictions.
