The city has - for one of the rare occasions - missed out on the worst of the storms to date which stretch all the way down the coast from as far north as Townsville to Tasmania.
But with the humidity remaining high across the state due to the tropical moisture, it is expected that more rain will develop throughout the day with up to 20mm predicted to hit the city.
IN THE NEWS
Fortunately Ballarat looks to have escaped the worst of the storms which have seen thousands of lightning strikes in New South Wales and Queensland.
The worst of the rain in the state looks to have also headed east, after the Otways recorded a "one in 20 year" event in the 24-hours to 9am.
At Mount Cowley, near Lorne, 117 millimetres of rain fell in just 24 hours.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Christie Johnson told Weatherzone that amount of rain was rare even for the wettest climates
Other parts of the Otways nearby also saw substantial falls, with 99mm recorded at Benwerrin and 87.6mm at Mount Sabine.
Ms Johnson said a low pressure system that moved across into New South Wales yesterday was gradually tracking south over Victoria as it swirls back on itself.
"It's not unusual for us at this time of year to get these weather systems," she said.
"The difference with this system is that it's actually tapping into tropical moisture. The system extends so we're drawing air down from the tropics further north, so that's producing a lot of this rainfall because we've got this extra moisture in the atmosphere.
"It's also why it feels quite humid and muggy over the state yesterday and then again today."
