Police and firefighters attended the BP service station on Skipton Street about 3am in response to reports of offenders ramming two parked cars, pushing one into a petrol bowser.

Police informant First Constable Steven Tung told The Courier a Volkswagen Amarok rammed the two cars causing extensive damage.

No one was inside the cars at the time of the ramming but it is understood the owners of the cars were standing nearby and saw the incident unfold.

One car was pushed into a petrol station bowser, causing an estimated $50,000 damage.

Valves immediately cut off when petrol bowsers are hit, so explosion was not an immediate concern, First Constable Tung said.

Firefighters attended to clean up the scene.

The Courier understands the service station was closed on Saturday morning.

There was visible damage to one of the petrol bowsers.

First Constable Tung said the offenders and victims were known to each other and the victims have provided statements to police.

He said the Volkswagen Amarok was later found on fire and burnt out on Carpenter Street in Wendouree about 4.30am.

A burnt patch remains on the side of the road where the car was alight.

There was no threat to property and no one was injured in the fire.

First Constable Tung said the Volkswagen Amarok was not known to police.

Crime scene detectives will assess the car and work to identify the VIN number.

Police are still looking for the second offender car that was at the petrol station but not directly involved in the ramming.

Officers do not expect this car to have sustained any damage. It is described as a silver, four wheel drive utility.

First Constable Tung said he and other Criminal Investigation Unit officers were continuing the investigation.

He said CCTV footage from the petrol station and statements from victims and witnesses had provided leads.

"We believe the victims and the offenders are known. It wasn't a random act of ramming and driving off," he said.

Residents around Carpenter Street and Langstaffe Drive in Wendouree who have CCTV cameras are asked to check footage and notify Ballarat Police Station of anything of interest.

Officers will continue going through CCTV footage and making inquiries with other witnesses as part of the investigation.

Meanwhile, Ballarat fire crews had a busy night with other call outs to a number of false alarms as well as the BP incident and car fire.

Crews have also been busy monitoring and responding to fallen power lines after Friday's severe weather.
