The pan de muerto is a traditional bread baked for the Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead - it's usually eaten by families along with their loved ones' favourite foods, as families come together at cemeteries to visit graves.
It's a special way to honour and catch up with family members who have passed away, and is one of the day's many traditions.
The Gatehouse Cafe set up a pair of ofrendas, or altars, so people can join in - there's one outside, and one upstairs, decorated with calaveras and bright flowers.
There's space for people to leave photos of family members, and their own food offerings, as well as plenty of snacks from Mexico and Malta in the cafe to try.
Cafe owner Annmarie Sloane said the pandemic had made people think about the fragility of life more, and she wanted to give people more ways to engage with the topic - this is the Gatehouse's third Dia de los Muertos celebration.
She said it was particularly important this year, with a noticeable amount of people from Melbourne heading to the cemetery now that restrictions have eased.
"With COVID lockdowns, numbers have been restricted for funerals this year, and people have missed out on the internment of their loved ones," she said.
"This is an opportunity to come to the cemetery, get flowers, get candles, and spend time with their loved ones - having a celebration like this gives people a chance to stop, take a breath, remember those who passed away, and those who are still walking on this planet with us that we should love and cherish more than ever before."
IN THE NEWS
The bright Dia de los Muertos displays join other art installations in the cafe and through the cemetery as part of the Ballarat International Foto Biennale.
"There's also the beautiful botany - the New Cemetery is one of only two botanical cemeteries in Australia, it's something Ballarat should be proud of," she added.
The Day of the Dead is on November 2, which is also All Souls' Day, but celebrations can also take place on November 1, which is day of the children or All Saints' Day.
