Club chariman of selectors Wayne Morgan said consistency across all 21 ends will take the side a long way, however, to improving on last season's efforts.
Ahead of the season start date, which is quickly approaching, The Courier caught up with him to chat about the season ahead for Buninyong and his expectations for the campaign.
Q. How has the preparation for the season been?
A - I guess like everyone we've been interrupted not only with COVID but it seemed like when COVID didn't hit us, the weather did. We've been able to get together pretty well on the greens over the last month or so when weather's allowed, so not too bad I suppose. At least we've been able to get together and have a bit of practice.
Q. What are the emotions like heading into the season given what everyone has been through this year?
A - Everybody's really appreciated getting back together and just seeing each other again on the greens. We've had a few of those opportunities over the last month but I think everybody now is just keen to get going into competition ... we want to start playing Pennant, so let's get it going.
Q. Are you expecting similar personnel to return this season?
A - Pretty much. We've got a couple that are coming back from illness and injury, so at least one of those will probably come in. I think like a lot of sides I guess, we took the opportunity last year with (there) being no relegation and promotion, you can try out people in different spots. I think we've probably got quite a few that have been developing and be pushing up for positions in the top division. I'd say the basis will be petty much the same, but there might be a few changes.
Q. Besides yourselves, who do you see as the team to beat?
A - I suppose you've got to go for the big guns haven't you, you've got to go for your Victoria's and your Sebas's and BMS, Ballarat were up there. They're always traditionally forming up the top-part of the ladder, I think they're the ones you go for again.
Q. Who do you see as the big improvers?
A - I hope it's us. Linton seem to have come on pretty strongly since they've come up into the top division. Creswick play a lot of good young players and they've got a good mix of youth and experience, so apart from us, I'd like to think we are, I think Linton and Creswick will be pretty good.
Q. What's been your focus as a team to improve on?
A - Consistency. Quite a few games last year we challenged the top sides and we had some pretty close games but we went to sleep for five or six ends. When you're playing 21 ends straight through, you can't afford to do that, so we had a few last year that we should've won. I think we've just got to make sure that we're more consistent right from that first end right through the 21 ends.
Q. Is the gap between you and the finals as big as the results suggest?
A - I think we can certainly be more competitive. As I say, we just have to be more consistent. There's no reason why we can't be more competitive and challenge for the (top) four. In reality, some of our games last (season) we were a fair way away but as I said I think consistency's got a lot to do with that. So, if we can be consistent and play to our best ability across the 21 ends I don't see any reason why we can't challenge.
