Maybe it's time that contracts for resurfacing main roads and fixing potholes around Ballarat town and other areas are given to competent companies rather than the penny pinching cowboys who currently appear to be doing the work. The mindset of those contractors in Ballarat seems to be - there's a rather large pothole, let's leave it for a while and see if it can damage some cars because that pothole is just unavoidable, damn we have to fix it, let's not worry about how deep it is and what's going on with the substrata, let's just fill it and run away laughing and laughing 'cause we know in two weeks we'll be back.

And resurfacing highways? Let's not do any substrata work, let's use the minimum thickness of asphalt and (again) let's run away laughing and laughing because guess what?
HAVE YOUR SAY AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS STORY
Tracey Netherway, Ballarat
The reply from the department responsible is classical Monty Pythonish. Don't investigate why a new road appears to not meet the relevant standards, just keep filling the holes up with the same material ! John Cleese could not have written a more brilliant response !
Pat Cerra, Miners Rest.
Rather than Belinda Coates writing four columns on what we should do about climate change and not mention China once, she would serve us better travelling around Ballarat and filling in some of the numerous potholes that nearly resulted in the deaths of two bike riders last week. Think of them as coal mines and fill them in. This is action that will make a difference.
Martin Taylor, Alfredton
