Year 8 students Eliza Brown, Lucy Koros and Henry Brennan are working to create an education program to be rolled out at their school.
Henry said they were passionate about raising awareness to reduce the amount of plastic waste in the environment, particularly the oceans.
"We are the future generation and we are the ones who will eventually have the care for the earth," he said.
Data reveals about 3.5 million tonnes of plastic was consumed in Australia in 2018-2019, equivalent to about 100 kg per person
According to Australian Bureau of Statistics, 84 per cent of plastic used in Australia is sent straight to landfill.
Australians throw out 2.7 million disposable coffee cups every single day.
We are the future generation and we are the ones who will eventually have the care for the earth.
- Henry Brennan
Eliza, Lucy and Henry said they were figuring out when they could lead their fun education program on plastic waste with Year 7s at their school.
They will break the education program down into three activities, including collecting plastic waste and using it to make a sculpture.
The other activities will be a sorting challenge to separate plastics into what can and cannot be broken down and using the plastic waste to create a 3D model of what the ocean could look like if waste continues.
The group came up with the idea for the program while participating in Crazy Ideas College at their school.
Crazy Ideas College works with schools, organisations, businesses and government to help ensure young people play a key role in creating the future.
Lucy said she had learnt a lot throughout the program and while working to bring their idea to life.
"It has been a great program. I think we are very lucky to participate in it," she said.
"It has really opened up our classes minds and brought up issues that were left in the dark a bit. They have been brought to the surface which is good because we can raise awareness of them.
"We learnt a lot about prototyping, following up ideas and promoting them."
Eliza, Lucy and Henry's project idea will be showcased in the Ballarat community throughout the next two weeks as part of Crazy Ideas College's Beyond: By Ballarat project.
Their project and those of other students will be on posters in Ballarat businesses.
Community members can go on a walking tour of the ideas, using a map that is on the Crazy Ideas College website.
The map was published in Saturday's edition of The Courier. The Courier will continue to feature the student projects throughout the next two weeks.
