A man charged after allegedly causing a 15 centimetre cut to another man's face with a meat cleaver has appeared at court.
Scott Michael Harrison, 30, was remanded into custody after a short hearing at the Ballarat Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
Defence lawyer Scott Belcher said his client was involved in a 'wild drunken brawl' at the Little Bridge Street bus stop on Tuesday night.
He said a co-accused, who is a child and cannot be named, allegedly produced a meat cleaver and was waving it around.
Mr Belcher said Harrison allegedly grabbed the meat cleaver and caused a 15 centimetre cut to the victim's face.
He said a photo provided on the police brief showed a significant gash on the left side of the victim's cheek, but it was hard to see with all the blood.
Harrison is charged with intentionally causing injury and reckless conduct endangering serious injury.
He is also charged with reckless conduct endangering serious injury, affray, unlawful assault with a weapon being the meat cleaver, unlawful assault in company and using a weapon.
He is also facing a charge for breaching a family violence intervention order.
The co-accused, a 16-year-old Ballarat East boy, was charged with affray, assault with weapon and possess controlled weapon.
The child was bailed on Tuesday night to appear at a court at a later date.
Mr Belcher said it was 'drunk, drug affected behaviour' so he was not sure about the intentional aspect of the charges for Harrison.
He said he expected the prosecution would also look at whether the charge would need to be upgraded to causing serious injury.
Magistrate Letizia Torres said this would depend on the evidence available to the prosecution.
Mr Belcher said if this change was made, he would make a summary jurisdiction application for the matter to be heard in the Magistrates' Court rather than the County Court.
He said he also expected Corrections Victoria to charge his client with a breach of a community corrections order by the new alleged offending.
Harrison's case was adjourned for a plea guilty hearing in December.
When asked about custody management issues, Mr Belcher said Harrison had been affected by illicit substances in the past but this alleged incident was alcohol related.
