The park was designed and built by the City of Ballarat after it received $40,000 of state government funding as part of a $2.5 million investment to build 17 off-leash parks across Victoria to create jobs and support economic recovery from the pandemic.

The new off-leash park is purpose-built, fully-fenced and includes open space for the township's dogs to run, exercise and socialise in, while their human companions can benefit from seating and drinking fountains. Council contributed $13,000 towards the project.

The purpose-built dog parks were selected for funding through an expression of interest with local councils and assessed based on their shovel readiness to ensure construction could commence within six months.

The project was initiated by the Buninyong community and council consulted with local residents, the Wathawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, Department of Land, Water and Planning, and Buninyong Landcare Group in developing the project.

Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle said memories and friendships were made at good dog parks.

"The new dog park in Buninyong will help dogs and their owners take a break from their usual routine, get some fresh air and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of James Reserve," she said in a statement.

"This dog park is a place where memories are made, and friendships are forged."

South ward councillor Ben Taylor said he was delighted with the new dog park.

"This park will enable social interaction not only between dogs but also their owners, provide a safe environment for people to exercise their pets and allow for community education on responsible pet ownership," he said in a statement.
