According to Regional Roads Victoria, road closures will now begin from January 10 on Wiltshire Lane, with alternating lanes to be closed until January 21.
The entire road between Latrobe Street and Winter Street will be closed from January 24.
Detours will be in place, and businesses will remain open.
A Regional Roads Victoria update states "general traffic can bypass the Wiltshire Lane closures by using Whitelaw Avenue and Sutton Street to the east of the intersection, or along Ballarat-Carngham Road, Kennedys Drive and Paddys Drive to the west.
"To bypass the Learmonth Street full closure, general traffic will be required to detour along Latrobe Street and Winter Street."
The works are to install a new set of traffic lights, which will replace a roundabout at the busy intersection.
Funded by the state government, it is one of six intersections across Ballarat that will be upgraded - works are almost complete at Gillies Street and Gregory Street West, while closures are planned for Cherry Flat Road and the Glenelg Highway, and Hertford Street and Albert Street.
A set of traffic lights and extra lanes will be installed at the Docwra Street intersection with the Midland Highway at Sebastopol's southern gateway, while designs are in the works for an intersection upgrade at Dyson Drive and Carngham Road.
More information on the closures is available online.
