Pleasure of performing at Royal South Street

AT THE Royal South Street eisteddfod, almost every competitor seemed more than pleased to have the opportunity to perform on stage at one of the most historic theatres in Australia, and that pleasure shows on their faces.

Countless hundreds of volunteers yearly will attest to that. It's a joy to behold.

When the South Street Society transferred the title back to the people of Ballarat via the Ballarat City Council in the '80s, a written agreement was signed off by the council of the day that the South Street Society would have the use of the theatre for August, September and October each year to stage the "comps" free of rental and many ancillary charges. Unfortunately Her Majesty Theatre board (under control of the Ballarat City Council) has imposed more and more yearly charges, last year to the order of almost $140,000. (2011, Annual Report).

There are a number of excellent venues in Ballarat that are eminently capable of staging most of the major touring shows during August, September and October .
