POLICE
Ballarat Police are investigating an armed robbery of a taxi overnight.
The Courier will have more information on this incident throughout the morning.
Elsewhere in the state, Geelong's Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for witnesses after a thief targeted an elderly woman in the city yesterday, stealing her handbag which contained her fortnightly pension.
The 82-year-old woman was walking at the intersection of Aberdeen Street and Shannon Avenue when she was approached from behind by an unknown man about 12.30pm.
The man grabbed the woman’s handbag, pulling her to the ground.
The woman then managed to walk home and called for an ambulance.
She was taken to Geelong Hospital and treated for bruising to her hip and shoulder.
The offender is described as being Caucasian. He was wearing black clothing and white shoes.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au
FIRE
It was a quiet night for fire crews with only the one call out.
Fire crews were called to a false alarm in the central business district.
Ballarat Fire Brigade senior station officer Terry Fradd said residents still needed to vigilant despite the rain experienced over the weekend.
"Fire restrictions are still in place and you cannot burn off without a permit," he said.
"We have had very little rain and the grass is still very dry, the fire season is certainly not over."
AMBULANCE
Nothing of interest to report from our paramedics overnight.
TRAINS
