It was a busy night for fire crews with multiple call-outs throughout the evening.
Ballarat Fire Brigade senior station officer Shane Phillips said crews were first called out to a grass fire on Gillies Street at 5.30 pm.
The blaze drew in crews from Burrumbeet, Cardigan-Windermere, Learmonth-Addington, Miners Rest and Wendouree.
Mr Phillips said another fire started at a transfer station on Learmonth Street.
Firefighters fought the blaze, which started in a large mulch pile, for more than three hours.
WEATHER
Today we can expect a top of 26 degrees, however, we would still recommend taking an umbrella with you to work this morning with thunderstorms predicted for late in the afternoon and evening.
Tomorrow seems to be producing more of the same with a higher chance of rain predicted and a top of 22 degrees.
POLICE
Nothing to report from local police forces.
Elsewhere in the state, Preston police are searching for a car thief who offered to reverse a car for an elderly woman but drove off instead, leaving her stranded in the street.
The 83-year-old woman drove down a lane way in Preston but at the end of the lane she was reluctant to drive any further because of some broken bottles and glass on the road.
The women were approached by a young man who offered to help them reverse their car back along the lane way.
The women got out of the car to let the man reverse back but instead he took off leaving them standing on the footpath.
The vehicle, a red Toyota Corolla registered number WOZ 868, has still not been recovered and police are appealing for public assistance.
