After picking up her son from school, Sebastopol resident Michell Moran decided to visit her aunt in Brown Hill and pick up dinner for the family along the way.
Ms Moran said she stopped at the Sebastopol KFC and was told to wait for her chips to be cooked.
"I went to my aunty's house and my cousin was so excited so he opened it and he came to me and said 'Michell, did you get some chicken?', he was so shocked and said there was no chicken, it's just sweet and sour sauce. So I looked and I couldn't stop laughing," she said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Ms Moran said she called to restaurant to rectify the mistake, only for the restaurant to ask for the much-needed sauce to be returned.
"When my cousin picked it up, they offered him some freebies so he got some free chips and chocolate mousse, so it's not too bad," she said.
"I was supposed to be upset because I was hungry but I couldn't stop laughing."
Ms Moran said she put the mix-up down to a simple mistake.
"I'm not sure, I think it's an honest mistake but it would be a good prank," she said.
"I mentioned it to my coworkers and they didn't believe me. They thought I was joking. Lucky I had the photos to show them."
A KFC spokesperson said the mistake was a rare one.
"We haven't heard of a problem like that before and for all the sauce fans out there, unfortunately this isn't a new menu item we're testing," the spokesperson said.
"Occasionally mistakes happen and we sincerely apologise to the customer involved. We have replaced her meal and are reminding our teams to take extra care when handing out orders."
