Country Fire Authority crews were called to respond to a grass fire on the Ring Road Reserve, just behind Wendouree Reserve, near the bike track about 3pm. Fire had spread from a burning car into grasslands.
A witness told The Courier fire has spread so quickly through the grass.
Four firefighters on Sebastopol and Ballarat pumpers stopped to help. Five other fire trucks were on the scene.
The firefighters were travelling with a bus load of District 15 volunteers back from five days' fighting fires in Gippsland.
The incident has been declared safe.
