Motorists will not have to give way to Gregory Street West traffic while works are completed.
On Saturday morning, drivers noticed the signs had changed, following the completion of road works at the intersection - Gregory Street West traffic had been given priority, and Ring Road traffic had to give way.
Council installed electronic signs on Ring Road to warn drivers about the change.
A council spokesperson said in a statement the position was quickly changed back, however.
"Even with appropriate traffic management in place, it became apparent on Saturday that this reversal of long term driver behaviour at this intersection posed an unacceptable risk," they said.
"The decision was made to temporarily close Gregory Street and restore priority to Ring Road traffic as has previously been the case at this intersection.
"Traffic management will be in place from Monday morning to allow Gregory Street to re-open to traffic."
It is not known if the give way signs will be used later, given the infrastructure and line marking already completed.
Sealing works were recently completed on Gregory Street West between Ring Road and Gillies Street - the road will eventually be fully opened to provide another east-west link and take traffic off busy Sturt Street.
While drivers won't be able to turn right to head south on Gillies Street yet, the intersection has been identified as part of Regional Roads Victoria's Keeping Ballarat Moving upgrade program.
The state government committed more than $60 million to fixing some of Ballarat's most troublesome intersections.
Gillies Street and Gregory Street will soon have a set of traffic lights to make the intersection safer for drivers and pedestrians - in February, service relocation works began as part of preliminary works.
There are also plans to develop the Wendouree train station precinct, following works to duplicate platforms and install a footbridge last year as part of the Ballarat Line Upgrade project.
