Numerous fire brigades spent much of the night bringing three separate fires under control between 6pm and 11pm.
The first fire occurred on Tinworth Avenue, just south of the Ballarat Gold Mine, about 6pm.
Just after firefighters declared that fire under control, a second fire took hold near Woowookarung Regional Park on Boak Road about 7pm.
Then, several hours later, a third fire ignited, again on Tinworth Avenue, about 10.30pm.
A Country Fire Authority spokesperson said the fire was about 100 metres by 20 metres and was spreading through the pine plantation.
CFA firefighters from Ballarat, Ballarat City, Buninyong, Buninyong-Mount Helen and Sebastopol were at the scene.
While there was no threat to the community, an advice message was issued at 11.47pm, for residents in Mount Clear, Sebastopol and Mount Helen due to the thick smoke.
