Dylan Wright kicked six goals for the victors, a match-winning performance.
Coach Tristan Batten told The Courier he was wrapped for his side to get the first win of the season.
"It was awesome. Everybody was up and about, hopefully this is a catalyst to start playing a little bit better footy and hopefully we can get a couple more (wins)," he said.
It was a tight contest for three quarters, Ballan leading at each break by 14 points, five points and three points respectively.
Holding the Saints to just 2.1 in the final term was the difference.
"To come out in the last quarter and put the game to bed showed good character, especially for a young team," Batten said.
The fixture doesn't get any easier for Ballan, Waubra, Skipton, Bungaree and Springbank to come in the next month.
Getting the first win on the board and the fact it only trails fourth placed Clunes by two games will instill some confidence in the Blues, however.
