The Gregory Street West intersection has been the site of several crashes in the past 12 months, including two in one week in October 2020.
The City of Ballarat had attempted to fix the intersection by changing traffic priority, but was forced to revert back after drivers revolted.
The intersection connects to the Ballarat Link Road roundabout, and currently has an 80km/h speed limit.
Council had previously flagged plans to build a roundabout, pending funding, last year.
The federal government will also fund a $1.15m rebuild of Gillies Road north of Addington Road in Ascot, a $700,000 rebuild of Cuthberts Road between Whites Road and Finchs Road, and a $750,000 upgrade of parking at Lake Wendouree's St Patrick's Point.
IN THE NEWS
The funding is from the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program, designed to improve safety, capacity, and travel times, according to a media release.
Previously, the federal government announced Black Spot funding to upgrade a deadly intersection in Kingston, and improve traffic management at the corner of Dana Street and Dawson Street near Dana Street Primary School.
